Piercing Apprenticeship vs. Piercing Course: Which One is Right for You?

Updated: Feb 25

Now, here’s a conversation you probably thought we’d shy away from—but nope, let’s talk about it! This is actually one of the key discussions that led us to launch The Curator Academy, and we believe there’s a place for both options depending on your circumstances and goals.

The Case for a Piercing Apprenticeship

A traditional piercing apprenticeship typically lasts around a year (sometimes longer) and involves hands-on experience under an experienced piercer. But let’s be honest—it’s not for everyone.

Great for those who:

  • Can commit to a long-term learning process

  • Don’t need immediate income (many apprenticeships are unpaid or very low-paid)

  • Learn best by shadowing and working in a live studio environment

  • May not have the upfront investment for a piercing course

Potential drawbacks:

  • Finding a good apprenticeship can be tough—not every studio offers them, and competition is high

  • It requires a significant time commitment, which may not be feasible for everyone

  • The pace of learning is often dictated by the studio, meaning it could take longer than expected to get hands-on experience

The Case for a Professional Piercing Course

If committing a year or more to an apprenticeship isn’t realistic for you, a piercing course can be an excellent alternative. However, not all courses are created equal, and this is something we take very seriously at TCA.

Great for those who:

  • Need to start earning sooner rather than later

  • Want structured, high-quality training within a shorter time frame

  • Are happy to make an upfront investment in their future

  • Prefer a focused learning environment rather than waiting for opportunities in a busy studio

Potential drawbacks:

  • Some courses promise to teach every single piercing in just a few days, which is simply unrealistic and unsafe

  • Courses vary greatly in quality—choosing the wrong one could leave you unprepared for real-world piercing

Why We Took a Different Approach at TCA

We refuse to be one of those training providers claiming you can learn all piercings (including dermals) in just a few days. That’s not how mastering this craft works! Instead, we’ve designed a comprehensive course focusing on the most popular, in-demand piercings to ensure our students become world-class, confident piercers.

Our approach balances thorough education with real-world application, giving students the best chance at success—whether they go on to work in an established studio or start their own business.

So, which path is right for you? It depends on your circumstances, learning style, and career goals. Both have their merits, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. But what’s most important is choosing a reputable training option—whether that’s a high-quality course or a well-structured apprenticeship—so you can start your journey as a skilled, confident piercer.

Still unsure? Get in touch with us—we’re always happy to help you figure out the best route for your future in piercing!
